On 28 th May 1977, the first international handball match between Ghana and Togo in the first ECOWAS Games Eliminations was played in Accra. Ghana lost in the men and women division, 5-32 and 6-15 respectively. Handball was included in the National Sports Festival held in Accra 9 th-15 th July, 1977. The following regional teams took part in the Festival: Greater Accra, Volta, Central, Brong Ahafo, Northern, and the Ghana Armed Forces.

Handball is the newest game within the sport games’ category but its development and origin goes back in history. Ball games were gaining popularity at the turn of the century in Europe. Various ball games were played but the most comparable to handball game was Konrad Koch’s Raffballspiel game. It was played in German schools in the 1890s.
Handball was invented by Nicolaj Ernst in 1897 in Nyborg, in Denmark. It is an indoor game played between two teams, containing a total of 7 players each. In the game, the players pass the ball with their hands and try to score by throwing the ball into the goal of the opponent team. Each team contains 6 outfield players and one goalkeeper.
By the late 19th century, handball was being played in Germany, Scandinavia, Czech Republic, and Ukraine. The first evidence of handball goes back to long before, however. The women of the Roman Empire played a game similar to handball, which they called expulsim ludere. There were other handball-like games played in Medieval France.
