Almost every sports point system starts with 0, but tennis points start with love. Because in the game of tennis zero is known as love. When you won the first point in tennis it’s called 15. When you won the second point it’s called 30 and won the third point which means your score is 40.
You need to score four points to win a game of tennis. The points are known as 15 (1 point), 30 (two points), 40 (three points) and the fourth would result in the winning point and the end of that game. If the scores went to 40-40 this would be known as deuce.
The winner of a tennis game must win with a two point advantage. In other words, if the score is 40-0 and the server wins the next point, the server wins the game. Consequently, if the server loses the next point the score is 40-15 and the server must continue to serve and play out that game.
If the spin or wind brings the ball back over the net, then you must hit the ball in order to win the point even if that means reaching over the net to put the shot away. If you fail to touch the ball, then the player who hit the spin shot wins the point.
